Yes you can use a controller/gamepad. You should not have any problems binding the buttons, although if it has an analog stick on it then it can be tricky to get it to work (but it can still be done).

Is it so hard to either help someone out with some information instead of talking about your personal preferences of controller vs mouse? Guy didn't ask for your opinion on the matter, he asked if it was possible.
