What ways are there to fix lagg???

It's my first day playing this and I have been lagging severely. Please help

By "lag" you mean low FPS (choppy gameplay) or network lag (high ping/latency)?

Yes, I'm having trouble with both, can you please help. And run me through it STEP BY STEP. I'm getting desparate.

What's your PC configuration? You know, you shold meet some requirements to run Quake Live smootly.

Try to use the "High performance" preset.
Get ingame, press ESC -> Game settings -> Basic tab -> you'll see "Config preset:" on the bottom right.

That should set your graphics to the lowest to have the best performance possible.

The problem is that you don't really specify what kind of lag you have.

In console, type: cg_drawfps 1
The game now will display your FPS in the corner, as a number. So tell me, what is your avarage fps in-game? And what are your computer's specifics?

open up the console and type cg_lagometer 1 or cg_lagometer 2...then take screenshots while you are getting bad lag.

fps-lag: go to options -> game settings -> advance -> postprocess -> disabel postprocess..
network-lag: dont play with handyinternet, join only servers in ur country (customize ur gamebrowser)

kill all running programs in background (antivir, defragprogs, firewall, spywareprogs, java****, quicktime****, maybe plugincontainer.exe)
and try to run ur browser in high priority..
