Quake Live Strafe Training (i suck)
I downloaded a Quake Live Training map made to increase strafe jumping skills, yet I can never manage to make it past section 2. I also over jump section 0-1, which is an annoying thing to put up with. But I cannot figure out how people I am seeing on you tube actually beat levels 2 and above. I cannot seem to pick up ANY SPEED at all. The map is called Raztrainql_beta3, a little video below for a demonstration. Is there anyone here that can help my strafing because I have been practicing this map for 3 weeks now and no change. I am pretty pissed off now...
The orange level is what I'm doing...
After much effort I think I got to lane 5, but definitely no further, and I've been playing quite a while.
I also asked some other top players and they said they got to about the same spot, so I wouldn't worry too much if you can't complete the thing. It's extremely difficult imo.
Anyways without seeing a demo of you trying it it's difficult to speculate as to what you may be doing wrong.
I'll record one right now
uploading soon, also I had really bad fps trying to record that... but the video looks fine. So I did mess up a lot while jumping across the platforms, sometimes I didn't jump which had to do with it.

You were recording a demo right? Not some kind of live video capture?
Can just record a demo and upload to a file sharing site like filedropper and paste the link.
I mean a video would work too, it's just a lot of extra work.
Okay so here is some video footage I am uploading... also it will take a while before the video can be viewed... just bookmark it and come back if it doesn't work. Anyways thanks...
heads up, eta an hour and 5 minutes left on upload... I started not long ago.

I can't help but feel that some of the low pitch movement is having an adverse effect on your speed. Try to keep the crosshair more level with the ground and see if that helps.
For the longer initial jumps you definitely need to turn faster.
When you've been jumping for a bit like when you just went down the corridor, try and glance over at your mousepad and see what you're doing with your mouse/hand. Is it comfortable? Is it natural?
I played it just now to see how I'm doing on it after all these years.
I got to #4. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rokbdjx03zz4d72/raz.dm_73
Snap, I wrote a lengthy post about the initial fails and then watched the vid till the end. You're already good ;s just three pieces of advice:
- DON'T do earlier lanes. This will mess up your progress, because it makes you focus on landing on pads rather than optimal speed, essentially forcing you to slow down. Practice on lane 5 or 6, maybe even 7.
- Turn speedometer on (if you haven't already) and get better at circle jumps. This is connected to doing later lanes since they require a decent start.
- Don't worry about finishing a lane, for two reasons. First is that the last gap in Raz3r's map is generally slightly oversized. Second - the fact that there isn't a single map in Quake Live that will allow you to get past 1k ups on more or less flat ground, without the use weapons or jumppads. Being good at kicking off is a hundred times more useful than keeping a decent acceleration continuously for 20 seconds. Heck, learning to clip/skim is more essential than a lane 8 circle jump. But being able to do the first 5 jumps on lane 8 consistently is an achievement that, while not absolutely necessary, does have its practical applications, so you could go for that.
So, practice some more and you're there. Btw, this line
... is nonsense.

I'm downloading your demo right now, and thanks guys for the help and instructions. I will try and use them to the best of my ability. But yeah, I sort of look downward sometimes which is bad... but sometimes if I look downward and sideways it makes me sort of move quicker... don't know why. Anyways once I get better I'll post here a demo or something
It's not. Unless you intend to keep your crosshair horizontal so that you can shoot people, but maintaining any accuracy and gaining speed simultaneously is generally impossible.
