999 Ping

This has only started in the last couple of days or so. Randomly during a game my ping will just goto 999. Weirdly during this time I can see peoples chat and hear them fragging for about 1 minute before its dead. I don't get kicked out of the game like a connection timed out or anything just stays 999 with the ethernet port icon in the bottom right.

I thought it might have been my internet at fault so I have set up several pings to run during the game. When I go 999 these pings continue with successful replies which points to either the isp (virgin media (yes we know that sucks for quake)), my installation or the quake service itself?

Any ideas?

When that happens try typing net_restart in console. It will sometimes pop you out of a lagged state.

I'm a bit confused by the "several pings" comment. Are you pinging the server you're playing on?
