I look at it like, with the games that come with a lot of windows packages, do people want to play solitaire or play chess?
With solitaire you can just jump in and mindlessly pass the time. As long as you know a little bit about the game you should win somewhat.
With chess even if you set it to easy you still have to kind of think and concentrate.
What game ends up being more popular? Solitaire of course.
Sometimes people aren't looking for a hobby but just a time waster. QL doesn't work as well for these "super casuals". It requires a bare minimum of focus and concentration that is higher than these other games.
It's not necessarily that they "can't handle" quake, it's just not what they're in the mood for.

let me explain....
When people say "popular" what are they really saying ?
when you have billions of dollars its is easy to make a game like Halo or Cod popular.
i have never see quake 2, quake 3 for pc commercials on tv, yet microsoft had the $ to make sure Halo got advertised by news anchors on tv .
but whats important to understand is you can make anygame sell millions of units when it comes free with the console .... you understand ?
Quake the original was probably the first real popular PC fps game, *wolfenstien* had followers and *doom* but quake was more played, then when Quake 2 came out a big time following happened and then the popularity monster Quake 3 Arena.
The top fps of old with hard core gamers was the Quake series because of Arena, then the Unreal series entered the mix and Half Life with it's team mods took a huge amount of people away from Quake and Unreal.
Then the years of the middle 2000's though 2008 lets say was a huge cluster of new games and the hard core three mentioned above fell back in popularity
Then the better console at the same time of the mass of new games came into play, and really opened up gaming to everyone so to speak, and the games changed and got easier as to competition, which is good for the money angle.
COD is the main game for competition at the moment, but Quake may somehow catch up with them, but some type of gimmick in my opinion must be added, to make competition easier for the mass of gamer's, I don't have any good ideas on that.
But like I say those nerds playing COD thought they were bad ass, and several never even heard of quake

yup and its still impressive to know the playable D3 alpha demo was leaked in 2002 ....yep you read that right .... 2002 ....
" but some type of gimmick in my opinion must be added, to make competition easier for the mass of gamer's, I don't have any good ideas on that."
good point , nothing wrong in making the engine better.
are the ppl at id interested in doing a "spinoff"
another good thing to add would be the possibility to change the game commentator options like other languages and accents and such .
i personally like the festive americano/mexicano accent ^^
the problem is that quake is a good sport
CoD is full of random luck where even newbs will get a chance to kill better players, even if they don't win the game at the end of the day
