For the record I don't believe resolution X is better than resolution Y; you'll find good players at all sorts of game resolutions.
Like many things in a FPS, a lot comes down to personal preference.

1680x1050 @ 120hz - native res, 120hz doesn't work (Viewsonic) at any other resolutions. I used to use 640 when I had a CRT, this certainly looks better. http://i.imgur.com/24l1gkj.jpg

I remember when all games were in 320x240 (or 320x200). 400x300 or 512x384 were already high. 640x480 was a dream resolution
But it's still here in 2013. For example open qlrankstv - and select 240p. This will be even worse thanks to lossy, low bit rate compression.

After years of playing on CRTs in resolutions lower than PocketPCs screen's not to mention modern smartphones, I enjoy QL on a widescreen.
Tried to play in 2048+ on 50" but dropped that in favor of good 23". That's enough to play QL with FOV 130.

It's a trip running software quake 1 at 800x600 (just for fun) nowadays as before that would have brought the system to a crawl.
