So earbuds are better than headphones?
What should your volume be to hear footsteps and those things?

Footsteps are actually pretty loud on the earbuds. You should be able to hear them at almost any reasonable setting. You might be able to tweak the equalizer to compensate for larger headphones as Lorfa says. Maybe bumping up the midrange can help.

At any rate, it should never be uncomfortably loud. Normal conversation volumes, I would say.

Probably you could simply adjust the EQ such that the normal frequency of QL game sounds are made louder.

Yes, you might be able to. Point is though, that you don't need >$100 headphones to improve QL sound. $20 earbuds work just as well.

Well sound is very useful once you get used to it.

I'm using iPod earbuds, because my steelseries 7H went to hell. To make things even worse, I have a fan blasting in my face and TV playing in background. And I got no problem playing QL at all.

The thing is to get used to different sounds models and items make, just like how you learn when railgun is out or not, you will learn other sounds too if you pay attention to them.
