How do you guys generally time things? Be the first to get it and check the clock often? or is it more internal like "I bet the RA's coming up in a second.."

You can bet people with good spawns picked up the important items almost straight away, so you don't have to always be first there. Try to pick up one good weapon and be in good position to take RA at around 0:25 for example, or mega at 0:35. Once you have times for items just calculate when they respawn to the second and make sure you have good positioning early.
You don't wanna be on it too early.
Awesome, good tips guys thanks![]()
You can time by feel, sequence, calculation, or memorization.
Timing by feel is quick, and allows you to focus on other things, but it is inexact and error prone which can cost you dearly.
Sequence is a bit better, as in you know the bottom yellow will spawn after the red since they were picked up in that order last time. The downside to this is that the sequence is unlikely to remain intact for the whole game. It also doesn't tell you enough about when exactly the item will spawn.
Calculation is very precise, but can be very costly in terms of mental resources. Set cg_LevelTimerDirection to 0 so that the timer counts up, that way you can calculate by adding, which is usually easier than subtracting.
Memorization is the most ideal. "Enthusiast" gamers who play duels and TDM tend to use a mixture of memorization and calculation. For example, memorizing the times by 5s, like a mega picked up at :40 will spawn again at :15. If they pick it up at :43 they add 3 to :15 to get :18. Certain tricks exist, such as the one's place always having a certain corresponding number in the answer.
3 always ends in 7, 7 always ends in 2, 1 will end in 6 etc.
One way to practice is to use this utility: http://deadmen.us/quake-timers.html
You can't be the first to get an item all the time. However there are plenty of ways to reduce the negative effect of this. In a duel for example, you usually spawn on one side of the map and your opponent spawns on the other and you have some idea of what items he's going to get an how long it's going to take for him to get them.Be the first to get it and check the clock often?
For example, the megahealth in duels usually ends up getting picked up in about 3 seconds depending on the map, so the next one will spawn at :38, even if you didn't see it or hear it being picked up. One tactic is to delay the mega pick up to throw off your opponent in case they try to get the next one, just make sure he doesn't get it instead!
With some clever reasoning you can usually ballpark the item's timing depending on opponent position/behavior/map/game events.
That would be the "timing by feel" mentioned above. A good ability that everyone should have, just don't rely on it exclusively!or is it more internal like "I bet the RA's coming up in a second.."
- time RA
- run from fights when attacked
- LG rocks everything when not attacked
Key to winning 90% of T4 FFA matches. You can ignore Quad.

I only watched those 2 videos and he is not timing by the second, and his "feel" is way off. Would have lost like 20 duels in each of them lol. Maybe he has improved since but no idea as it says his last match was more than a year ago.
Also ffa "records" are absurd (jamerio did that, enough said).

My last FFA match on Quarantine I managed to snag every single RA. >_>
Hey guys, thanks to your advice, I get 90% of the RA's and 4 of the quads and placed 2nd in a FFA! There's hope yet! Just gotta work on aim and knowing how to move against certain weapons (like I noticed jumping while somebody has a rail = get hit often; jumping when somebody has RL means you get blasted in the air and you get thrown up to land to another rocket, etc)
