    How to get more players

I think its as simple as turning the broken server list into straight up matchmaking. I have to turn all my settings to 'All' to see anyone playing, there are never ANY people playing in my 'skill matched' thing. Has ID even noticed how broken their system is? They take away blood so kids can play, but kids would never have the attention span to figure out how to play with other people. Jesus, there are just no people playing. Give a matchmaking system, so games can get filled up quicker.

No offense, but the reason you probably don't see any skill-matched games is because you're in one of the lower tiers that doesn't have as many players. For tier 1 Clan Arena, I believe it's 5-15% of the overall playerbase (I don't remember the exact number :P) so you're not seeing as many players as you might see if you were tier 2, or consequently, tier 3/4 (Although tier 4 gets difficult to find games at times -- 3 is the best spot to be at since you can play with 3 and 4 then)

Server filter: all skills, all mods, "in your vicinity" (not a specific country or state, but the ones closer to you). The only restricted option is "all populated" (instead of "any game state") as it shows full servers that aren't displayed with the default settings, but you can join most of them.
Also there are more people playing in upper tier servers. Tiers1 and 2 can't see nor join tier3 and 4s servers (aren't displayed in the server browser and can't join them if they try it manually or via friend list), and viceversa.

As for cheaters, this game has been professionally and massively played for 13 years, and that's something very rare in videogames. A newcomer will think cs and scbw are filled with cheaters too, but will think it even more in QL because the game allows roflstomping more than those and since the very start of the match (unless zerg rushed lol).
Also it seems an anticheat was implemented some months ago, but it wasn't announced and it's server side (therefore not perfect). Thing is lots of people were banned at that moment and continued to do so afterwards. In 2/3 years I've only seen about 3 blatant cheaters and the last one was more than a year ago.

Latest update was a big blow for the game. Only a matter of time before it dies a slow and painful death.

You can actually buy Quake3 from Steam for 10$ There are active servers, and people to play for free. Done.

Q3 has 1/1000 QL's playerbase, therefore it's wasted money. Could play defrag for days though, and maybe a cpm duel from time to time.

Best thing to do would be buying both, so id gets twice the revenue.

If you buy it....how are you playing for free?
    Sometimes I wonder...
"Why is that frisbee getting bigger?"
    Then it hits me.

To expand on this idea a little; because I like it, and see its potential (and I love quake, forever).

    1. Simplify Matchmaking for free users (you can't pick and choose your server but you can pick and choose your gametype)
    2. Premium/Pro Users get the choice of creating/picking the server of their choice (as appropriate)
    3. Keep map pools relevant to competitive scene (or, encourage and liase with competitive communities to promote the idea of supporting quake and their community)

I'm only going to focus on the benefits, and i'd love for a good critical thinker to pick my argument apart.

    Point 1.

By simplifying matchmaking, you can streamline the player base, in effect, removing the illusion of choice and subsequent disillusionment when people discover that they're getting smashed. As soon as they get beaten down, they leave, find a new server. This makes for much less game time in servers (which means less ad revenue for id/bethesda). If you remove the option of choice people either have to like it or leave it, and you can then expand your business model by directing people into premium and pro subscriptions by strategically highlighting the benefit of going premium/pro.

    Point 2.

As it stands, the benefits for being premium/pro aren't so standout, there is no prestige, no sense of pride in the game besides the obvious loyalty that many (including myself as a past subscriber) have had. As I'm a student and unemployed, I can no longer afford to pay this subscription, but if I wanted to expand my option of choice and my quakelive experience, I'd be happy to part with the fee, as it stands now, there's no real motivation for me to do anything because my friends can invite me (granted i've been a member of the community since quakelive beta).

    Point 3.

By keeping the map pools relevant to the competitive scene (and by extension, matchmaking), you foster the one true thing that gave quake its devoted fanbase. The competitive aspect. This is a game that has such vast potential, yet so liittle appreciation, so take a step back, be google-minded and get inspired to inspire your fanbase.

    Final statement,

I'm a passionate competitive gamer, and I sacrificed alot of my life for this game and to see it fall down the drain (so to speak) is such a dissapointment. I've also vowed to contribute to the quake universe later on in life, and I stand by that vow, however I'm going to do it my way, when the opportunity presents itself. I'll personally never let this game be forgotten.

Also, don't just ban a guy because he's not articulate enough to communicate the general consensus in a legible way. He brings up a valid point, and I would be ashamed to call myself a community liason if thats how I treated members.

I understand that we can all be frustrated by the repetitive posting and lack of constructive contribution, but what really needs to be asked, syncerror, is what are you truly doing to foster this community? I understand that you're working on it, and that at one point or another you developed a love for it. All i'm asking is that you return to that love and do what you do because you love the game, not the poor paycheck you'd be receiving for your job right now.

    Kind Regards,

    Brad "risen" Smith
