QuakeLive is exactly the same thing as facebook, but is focused solely on FPS gamers... except that it's not up to par with facebook because like you, QuakeLive's management doesn't see it as a form of social media. they're too focused on it's function as a game, so the social aspect gets ignored.
However, Blizzard is on top of the social aspect of WOW, and so are many other games, so it's leaving id in a lurch and they can't figure out why. We'll keep getting a better and better game out of it, as they try to draw in customers with new features, at least until they can't afford to maintain it, but until they get the social features up to par it's too much of a barrier. without some kind of communication, it's not very much different from being a single player game
integrating a voicechat would be a huge step in the right direction, likewise adding a clan chat, and offline messaging all of which are integral to creating a strong social investment among the players. My clan can be separated into two groups: the tight core didn't become tight until we added voicechat. Those of us that use the voice chat get on almost every night and look forward to it. We visit each other if we travel near where another player lives, we send each other stuff in the mail.
