Complete newb having a question about circle jumping

    Title says it all.

I am a complete newb to quake live and have been playing since less than a month.
Although I am starting to get the hang of strafe jumping(I can complete lanes 0 and 1 on raz3r's training map),I want to learn circle jumping.(I can't even do the mouse movement of the ground part correctly)

    So my question is this-

How would you advise me to go about learning circle jumping?

(I've watched dozens of videos on youtube but still can't get it)

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Did you also watch the Warsow movement tutorial? Very good one if you ask me.

Can you do good (consecutive and accurate) 90°/180° turns? Like standing in the middle part of campgrounds and snapping your crosshair from doorway to doorway. That's easy to practice and I believe it will help your circle jump problem.

I'm pretty new to QL as well, but I'd say watching tutorials can only teach you the principles. As long as you know exactly what you should be doing, you've taken everything you can from it. The only way forward now is to practice over and over until you get it down. One thing which I've had to be careful about is not being too casual, especially when I've been practicing a while and might be a bit tired - make sure you try different things like turning at different speeds, and remember which methods yield the best results then try to replicate it. Hope that wasn't completely useless advice

Watch this video. Just don't mind the commands and the hud stuff as this is done is quake 3 defrag and are not available here. But it will give you a better understanding of what to do.

I donno about the training map (haven't tried it), but there are a ton of semi-difficult circle jumps in the premium maps that you can use as practice (toxicity has one that is easy from one direction and a little harder from the other direction and makes for good practice, furious heights also has a good practice one).

Where are you located? If you're near the east coast US I can try to help you by spawning a server and showing you some jumps for practice.

The Temple of Retribution lava pit is where quite a few people got the hang of circle jumping/strafing basics. I know I spent hours when I first started Q3 before moving onto XCM tricks etc.

Go to the entrance of Back Hallway and face the doorway and work on smoothly whipping your mouse 90 degrees towards the lava to generate some acceleration. The better you get at doing this the further you'll make the jump until you ultimately clear the lava pit.

It's not a technically sound explanation but wording the process isn't exactly easy heh. If you give it a try hopefully it helps ya.

@Karaqz-Thanks for the great advice! Its honestly been one of the best i've received on quake live.

@infntnub- Is that a premium/pro map? I can't seem to be able to find it in the Arena Browser o.O

    @malk_ - Been practising that since 5 days.Will continue.Thanks.

@VinOptimax -Thanks for the kind words.Your advise is valuable.

@stownr - Love the video, but it did not teach me anything that I already did not know

@CoolMike - Too far away to have any meaningful ping or time(time zones).

@On Topic - After 3 hours of cursing and raging I think that I finally have been able to nail down the exact cause of my circle jumps failing.
Its probably the speed at which I am moving my mouse.
At what speed should I move it at? (All the videos I have watched so far have expressed the speed in terms of fractions, which tends to be confusing.)

And forgive me if I am wrong but these are the steps to perform a circle jump, right?

1.Face approx. 60 degrees from your intended direction.

2.Press the forward key.(Fastest way to get till 320)

3.Strafe left AND move your mouse left till your aligned with your intended direction.

    4.JUMP.

5.Once in the air move your mouse slowly towards 20 degrees from the left (or right)

    6.LAND.

    7.Continue with normal strafe jumping.

Honestly, in light of the recent update, I cannot be certain if Temple of Retribution is still a standard map. :S

I don't know either but it's called "Retribution", now. Without "Temple of".
