Here's the deal, I would rather spend my time on QL than BF3. Stop being a sheep and actually stand up for what is in your best interest. The new update is killing the player base. Are you paid by iD? What is your motivation?
If you are just interested in a healthy community of peers, the new update is not for you. The new update = less players. Less players means you do not have a game to play!
"have fun" is the optimal phrase b/c that's not happening in QL anymore.
Wake up! Speak out! The new update is a mistake!
However, I will be playing BF3 in less than a week. The longer this goes on, the more other people will do the same.
I'm a free player. I would pay for membership in a heart beat. Except there are next to no servers to play on and when I tick premium servers I see nothing. Why would I pay when I can barely get a game in a standard server and can't even see a premium one?
I played last night and ten players were on playing instaCTF. Some of them were pro members and suggested starting an instaCTF server so that more maps could get played. They did, apparently, and some said they'd invite me. They didn't. I saw a premium server going with eight players in it, but couldn't join. After they did that the remaining free players on the standard server disconnected.
So no public games at all and one premium server going which you can't see unless you tick premium.
Should I get premium, I thought? To decide I watched to see how long it would be going for. Not long. Soon it was empty. But the public server never filled back up again either.
Today all day I've monitored. I'm not a percentages person but I'd say around 90 percent of the day servers have been empty whether public or premium.
So in the end, I have no game to play despite sitting here wanting to play. In the end, subscribers had no game. Therefore, if I had a subscription it would be a waste of money for me.
Start a server I hear people saying in other threads. Who will join? There's no one playing.
How that is good for the game is beyond me.
This is, of course, my experience in Australia. Rest of world may be different. But if QL wants to be a browser based game its model should be customized to suit the wider community and not just a local area.
I'm not whining cause of this new update. I don't care about updates. What I'm writing here about is that I'm a free player willing to pay if there were enough players to give me a game when I want to play. But there aren't so I see zero reason to pay right now since I'd only be paying money not to play a game which, clearly, makes no sense.
I'll keep watching to see if it improves or not as I really want to play and, if there are games, I'll pay. Right now, however, as I see it, its just not happening.
Yeah, preem players. Why should standard guys pay for empty servers? That's the gripe I hear from preemies all the time "no one ever is on the preem servers"! So now you guys get to play your fave maps with no players, LOL! Jokes on you! Before we could all vote our maps and all play standard or preem. Now if the map isn't in the rotating "pool" preemies can "invite" 5 standard players, LOL!
With the reality that T5 players...Yeah, I know there's no more T5...were playing against the first 20 game T1 players was realized by the QL community. The credibility of the the Devs was ruined probably for ever. All actions here on out are going to be assumed to benefit there buddies @ the top, and @ the expense of the rest of the players.
Face it, if QL was moving forward in any realistic way there would be newly designed maps and content not the same 20 year old maps everyone from Q3 saw years ago.
Is GM going to solve there insolvency by re releasing the friggin Chavette!......Anyone remember that 1? I had 2 google "crappy GM car from the 1980's" LOL!
Give us the incentive to pay for QL by pissing off the elites and implementing a real skill tier system...this comes right after getting crushed in a reggy CTF T4 pubbie last night....And dangle new maps...I mean, real NEW maps.....2012 NEW maps...for paying up for a sub....
Other than that, if all of QL was pay 2 play like it is? Ahhh, it would all be over for most of the player base and bye bye QL!
Power To the Latency Lizards! Down With the Low Lag princesses!
WOW, NICE UPGRADE, REALLY ENJOY SEEING ENTIRE SERVER RAGEQUIT 'CAUSE MAP IS UNPLAYABLE. PERSONALLY CAN NOT FIND ANY GAME TO PLAY. 1 HOUR, 1 GAME PLAYED.
NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. I am not and will not be a paying customer, motivation: Why would I want to pay money to do something that I believe is bad for me?
We should do more for Quakelive, I mean buy more premium, but Quakelive should return old system, maybe a little of actuals could stay.
Maybe id could invest some time in hiring an actually good promoter agency to help them deliver their product and service quakelive to a wider range of audience. Then they would possibly deserve my money. Im a player whose premium ran out a couple of months ago. Since I was busy at the time I did not care much. Only to return now and see this? This is absolutely horrible, the inability to vote maps has caused players to leave games as soon as the map changes to a non-popular one. This results in less games out there in total and thus much harder to find games.
I will not be renewing my sub because i FELT the need to go PRO this time, just so I can play the maps I want to play. I almost did too, when I realised I had been FORCED to this decision. I dont want PRO. I want PREM, so there are no adds. Yet Im being forced to go PRO to play at all. At this pace id, you will lose your player base quickly.
My suggestion is stop being tunnelvisioned and actually spend time in hiring a company who can devise a successful marketing strategy for your game. QuakeLive is hands down the best shooter out there in terms of high skill cap. You can use that, yet you dont. GO BIG. Seriously. In times where everyone is commercialising their product you've decided to remain hipsters.

Yak, this might help with your question.
"Today, October 6, 2010, id Software and Bethesda Softworks' parent company received a massive infusion of cash. This morning, ZeniMax Media announced that private venture-capital firm Providence Equity Partners is investing $150 million in the Bethesda, Maryland-based media firm for "increased game development, expanded publishing operations, and strategic acquisitions."
"On September 16, 2009 Richard Parsons, who became chairman of Citigroup Inc. in February 2009, joined Providence Equity Partners Inc. as a senior adviser"
"Will Hughes Vice President at Providence Equity Partners and former Investment Banking Analyst Lehman Brothers"
Given the track record of "responsible" investments from those companies Citi Group and Lehman, I'm sceptical that PEP will have IDs best interests @ there for front......
And we wonder why ID hasn't had any viable development capital from ZeniMax for QL. Looks like the writing is on the wall for this "investment". If they were going to follow up with QL development it would have shown by now.
A I posted the other day, companies cut back on offerings as there resources for a division decline as it draws near its closing.
Huge equity firms don't linger on unprofitable companies and products for long!
I think some people at Id want to keep it going is all. As far as Zeni and Bethesda are concerned they will let Id decide what to do as long as it doesn't cut too deeply into the companies overhead.
They don't want to advertise it because they'd rather it didn't exist. As it is it's just some kind of PR liability; shut it down and a lot of people will be upset at Id. Investing doesn't seem like it will bring any returns to them, and Id has nothing to demonstrate that it can.
So it continues as Carmack said, "limping along".
