    Hacking oh my good god

Is there a god damn way I can avoid hackers?
Seriously, getting fragged by the same guy everytime I spawn from crazy distances is ridiculous. I'm new but it's pretty obvious when someone is hacking.

    This sentence really doesn't work.
It takes years to get a remotely plausible feel for the possibility of someone cheating, and even then you have to spectate them before you can actually have a hope of being sure.

I've been through some of your last games, there is no-one performing out of the ordinary for this game in the ones I looked at. One player outclassing the rest of the server in one game sure, possibly an aliased player as it's a new account, but not beyond the realms of possibility at all, I would have to watch them, or at least see their performance after more games.

Some of the weapons in quake cover any distance instantaneously (machinegun, chaingun) and do that for a lot of damage (railgun).

Learn a lot more about the game and watch some tier4 players to start to learn before you start throwing accusations around.

It's not a big deal to find the hackers, the problem is getting them kicked from the servers. ID seems to have disconnected themselves from this issue. So, want to do well? I want to, and have been playing Quake since it's first inception on the PC game...

Practice, and kick their asses as best you can without the HAX in place. It's the hackers who are really the losers as they can't get any better than they are with their HAX. There are a ton of them, and the BIG LIE is that no one CAN hack on these server games, and that it's JUST not POSSIBLE. I have been doing computer work for over 30 years. Not only IS IT possible, but there are a BUNCH of jerks doing it.
So, best solutions for Hacker Free games? Get a PC game that you enjoy that is internet capable, and start a gaming club with those you have vetted. Serve the game yourself, and provide server side hack detectors. Once you have a group of 50 or more that you have decided are NOT hacking, you can pretty much turn off all your hack detectors, and play with your known players. If someone starts to hack or you suspect as much, turn the hack detectors back on, and see who's cheating. Give them a warning, then boot them if they continue.

There are several people out there (on QL) who claim that "EVERYONE is HAXing. It's just part of the game now...". THAT is complete bull, as I don't hack. Yes, it gets frustrating playing against unfair odds, but when you WIN, you REALLY win.

Don't let the @$$h0l3's get you down! Run then down. Friend people you think are playing fair, and just play with them. It'll take a while to get a bunch of like minded gamers, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Actually it was a good answer. He asked how to avoid hackers. I said "Don't play online games." Now unless you plan on becoming a logger or something I'm pretty sure you're going to be away from hackers.

For that, unless you are a good programmer and good in other stuff i think that you whine too much (in other words: Did i lose? They use hack. Did I win? I'm better than my enemies that anyway use hack. There is no chance that someone is better than me, even cooller, rapha or whatever are worse), so the right answer is:

This, since QL dev team have had a good idea with friend management, is a good idea. It's simple to gather nice players even if you don't know them.
    - If your ping is > 95 (but stable) QL is very hard.
    - While we waiting an automatic system that recognize obvious bad players (obvious teamkillers, obv. cheaters, and so on) we can use the great friends management to block bad players. (side note: not so obvious bad behaviours are hard to be recognized by automatic analysis)
    - You are in tier4 and you get destroyed and do you want to come back to tier 3? Click here for the solution.

as Yakumo said, there are loads of talented players around in Quake, and new comers are struggling with the game even if they have previous experience with other games, because there are players who have been playing quake since the mid-late 90s

I'll advise to everyone who is frustrated to spectate the good players in their matches and learn from them

I bet you're going to be good too, but first you have to accept there's people out there who actually are able to use lightning gun and machine gun with more than 20 % accuracy

The biggest trend I've noticed recently is lower level players are the ones here claiming about hacks and bots. Remember the Arthur C. Clarke quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." In Quake this directly translates to "Any sufficiently skilled player is indistinguishable from a hacker."

These guys are obviously smart enough to find their way to the forums -- but maybe we need some kind of sticky up there to explain this to new/low-level players.

The burst of complaints also seem to come around dev-pick times when skill levels are all mixed together and Tier 1/2 players are thrust in the realm of high-end Tier 4 players.
Any sufficiently skilled player is indistinguishable from a hacker (to paraphrase Arthur C Clarke)
