    Currently in the Pipe

Following the whirlwind of QuakeCon last month the Quake Live team has been hard at work but quiet over the past several weeks, so I wanted to drop in to give a brief update concerning what I've been up to and our next upcoming updates.

The majority of my time over the past month has been dedicated to working on new level design. In addition to some smaller works we have going (which should be nice for the Small CA crowd), I have been working on a Capture the Flag level that I've had on my mind for several years. Last month I found a sketch pad that I had carried around at QuakeCon 2010 and had filled with overhead floor/flow plans, room designs, and wall details for this map. Upon getting back to the office following this year's event, I quickly got to work at bringing those designs to life.

Last year I released Stonekeep, and I'm still pretty pleased with the design. It was meant to be a fairly large and open map, something that would allow a lot of people (5v5ish) to hop on and enjoy at one time. And while it still holds up decent for some 4v4 and even 3v3 play, the most common request sent my way has been that they wish it was just a little smaller, a tighter fit for the standard 4v4 competitive team size. So this time around the layout for my new arena still keeps the open feel that I enjoy but is scaled down and designed much more for 4v4 play.

Currently I'm working on finishing up the visuals and detail work so that we can get it on the road to release. As things progress a bit further I'd like to release a few screenshots in advance until we're ready to include it in an upcoming update, but currently we do plan on pushing at least one content update out before my new map is released.

I look forward to wrapping up my work on the level and getting some playtime in on it with everyone, so on that note... I should get back to work on detailing!

Great, I look forward to playing it!

I would suggest that in order to get your new maps played more on pub servers you could automatically change standard servers to premium when there are enough premium players on it? I mentionned this on ESR and may as well say here as well. When there are 60% premium players on the server it switches to premium, this way subscribers can just seek each other out on the pubs by looking out for premium players in the server browser. Just put a (P) or something next to the nickname.

Why are you wasting time making levels nobody's gonna play, when the FFA gamemode needs reduced playersize?

Will this new map be pro/premium only? cuz releasing a few more standard maps would be nice and would draw more players in...

Working on map content does no prevent us from changing the size that our default servers run at, it is simply a matter of preference. Since our launch we've ran at various sizes depending on feedback. Some players prefer larger servers (16), some prefer small servers (8). The current default of 12 was an acceptable middle ground that we found the majority of people were happy with.

If anyone feels that this current value should be altered, give us some feedback within the next week and we will take the new data in consideration.

That probably means there's some small CA maps coming as well.
