    Game Mode - Red Rover

Red Rover is a game mode available in Rocket Arena 3, a popular mod for Quake 3. I open this thread to give more visibility to the past, present and future requests for this game mode.

    Rules

The game starts with two evenly balanced teams, each player with all weapon and armors (as in CA).

    When player A kills an enemy B, A gets 1 point, B loses 1 point, and B re-spawns in A's team.

The match finishes when the last player of one team gets killed. Optionally, this player is awarded a "last man standing" 5 points bonus.

Players accumulate points from match to match. After 11 matches, the game ends, and the scoreboard shows the players ordered by decreasing score (as in FFA), the first being declared the winner.

    Appropriate for public play

This mode is especially suitable for public servers where casual or competitive players want to enjoy the game without taking it too seriously. Moreover it provides good fun even in non optimal situations.

The key features are summarized here:
    • Although a team based mode, every player is on his/her own. The goal is to gather as many points as possible.
    • The action is continuous and fun. There is no waiting time after dying, and anybody is welcome to join mid-game as the number of players does not have to be even.
    • The mode is more robust to poor team play, to people deliberating trying to hijack their own team, or to big skill gaps in the skill of the players.

I add here a more subjective opinion, that I do not include to the first post to keep things more clean.

Imho, Red Rover can be seen as an a better alternative to random public CA, an alternative that would be interesting for a big chunk of the current CA audience.

In random public servers, the conditions are often suboptimal:
    • Some players do not care about the team aspect of the game. They just want to practice aiming/dodging, or to play brainlessly and spend some time. CA is suitable for them, but actually their presence hinders the experience of those who want to play in team.
    • The number of players can be odd. Often people join mid game, and do not want to wait. Similarly, a player can disconnect mid game, forcing an other player to spectate, or spoiling the team ballance.
    • The skill distribution of players can be widespread. In CA a less skilled player is likely to wait most of the match as he dies at the start.
    • There may be players deliberately trying to mess other people game, by shoting at their team mates, pushing them to the void, hiding etc. This usually breaks the team balance.

CA suffers from these conditions, becoming a worse experience. Still, CA is the only game mode that offers an easy get in and the ability to play all weapons, quickly test weapon combos and so on.

Red Rover is much more robust to these suboptimal conditions, as it allows every player to rely on the team without being hindered by it.
