Completely agree. I used to be amazing, but now, take this from a player who currently sucks balls after a long absence. I have no delusions. I know that the only way I'm gonna get any better is to hit up Ch1bz and get 20-1'd a few times. This game is a hell of a lot better than most competitive FPS' out there right now. In fact, I think the knee jerk defense KETNAR mentioned is partially if not directly responsible for why so many games are unplayable now. Take CS for example. That game was so full of cheaters who couldn't cope with loss by CAL season 8 even with anti-cheat clients running the only real discussions that took place mid match were, 'Who's legit." discussions. We even had problems amongst our own team members, which was total hypocrisy if you know our group. Suck it up and get killed a few times.

By the way, Ch1bz, stop being so modest. We were playing CPMA on LAN for a few months before this game came around and you won some pretty sweet prizes before the QL days. One of which you gave to me, so I know. <3

Yeah, CPMA on LAN with bots, you and MCZ was how I learned. :P But as a whole, you get what I'm saying.

Nope, I keep a copy of Q3A and even QW around just to play against the insane eye-popping-rage educing bots.

After that, QL is kinda laid back. Save for the trolls.

Science shows the handheld controller is crap for games.... :P| START learning how to play.
[See why] Microsoft dropped the idea of PC/Xbox interplaying.| [The rest of us did.] :P

totally agree. i came back after 7 or 8 years away from quake. i was decent, not great at q3a and loved ctf (worked hard to improve, but only played it for a couple months.) and played q1 and q2 a little bit. when i came back, i jumped right in playing with my sister and all her tier 4 friends. yea, i got destroyed a lot, and i did get frustrated some. i tanked it down to t2 quickly, but i still kept going to the games where the good players were.

i also found the forums, changed my config and sens up as recommended by better players, struggled to get used to that as well, but still kept on the grind. im ashamed to say i complained a little at first as well, but while i was in here complaining, i was still slugging it out 2 tiers over my ranking, learning, speccing, and still getting beaten up. then one day i said screw it, joined my first ever skill matched game and destroyed it. a few more matches and i was bumped up a tier, and starting to get confident in my abilities. these days i expect to walk into a t4 ctf game and be a strong factor in the game even if im playing like crap that day. and guess what? im still learning and improving. my decision making still needs some work, and i need to stop playing so aggressively at times, but the effort is worth the early frustration for sure.

ive even since expanded to other games types. ca is boring and i dont know the maps because ive only ever played ctf, but its a good place to work on my LG without caring about the outcome lol. ive also had some very good teachers, and for all the rubbish about the high end players being pricks, while some of them are, most of them are great guys, and quick to be helpful.

I just played against CooloutAC a couple days ago and he was commenting in a tier4 ca server that he was "biding time to go back to tier 3". So I fired him up saying that tier3 was no longer an option for him and that the only way to really improve his game was to go tier 4 and stay there.

I've been playing quake since August, and can relate to the original poster. Having been in/lead a successful CS team that competed for $$$ in the harsh NYC/NJ lan scene environment 6 years ago, I appreciate competition, as well as modulated skill tiers. I advanced through them pretty quickly and have sustained tier 4 now since January. It wasn't easy, but at least I could choose my difficulty along the way. If i did well in a tier 2 server, I would try my luck in a tier 4. I actually complained about the tier system (Oct or Nov forum post) before I really considered how effectively it aided my game. Now I'm getting more comfortable with altering my config to my liking and dabbling in duel which I completely suck at.

Transitioning from cs to quake wasn't as hard for me because I was open to learning a new game, and allowed myself the humbling experience of losing and getting my ass kicked. Yes it was frustrating coming from somewhere (cs) that I was very good at, but honestly quake's gameplay is vastly superior which kept me going. It's weird "passing" people that I played with (some of whom have been playing since 2009) in the lower tiers and now not be able to play with them at all, but I look forward to helping similar transitional players and others who want to try to get a grasp for a fun game.

    Tweaks may be the reason?

My post may be a little off-topic, but it might be in relations to why all the non-veteran players get so wooped up when they join QL.

I know a lot of Quake Live/ Quake 3 players, whatever you want to call them, modify their settings to the point where their game looks nothing like the way the developer originally intended for it to look. For instance, the field of view angle. With all these tweaks and modifications to the FOV, lighting, frame rendering. including network speeds and "snaps 40" type of stuff, do you guys believe this heavily influences the way one is able to perform in this game? Do you believe they have a significant advantage over the other players who use default settings to the point where it technically isn't fair?

Would someone shed some light on this subject for me, please? If so, could you explain it in technical terms?

    Thanks.

I remember this guy CooloutAC opened a thread for "PC Build suggestions" then he talked sh1t to everyone that gave suggestions and he further claimed that dell pcs were cheaper and faster than custom built ones.

Dude is a moron to the max and he sucks dix at quake.

It does to a point. I remember when I started QL with the default setup of 90 fov and no brightskins I was livid because I had played cpma for awhile and could actually see, knew a couple commands to make it easier for me to get around maps and, you know ,see people. It does help a lot from the start.

But even when everyone has the exact same setup, some are still going to be better than others. There is an advantage from knowing how to do the simple things like set a comfortable fov, picmip, this or that, but at a point skill overrides all of that.

Sorry to make it short, gotta run to work in 5. :P
