Even if you could, it's a terrible idea. Buy a mouse.

Use a different IRC client then. XChat/HexChat is a good IRC client.

We shouldn't have to rely on a third party communication tool. Funny this thread is the sticky for general chat. How easy would it ve to implement an irc like client into quake?

We should have something like that in Quake. You can only chat with friends on Quake's chat.

I think that's quite unlikely. QL is a pretty small project and the philosophy seems to have been to focus all the resources they have on things that only they can do, stuff that is core to the game. It's why the game doesn't have integrated voice comms. irc has been around since the dawn of time and is well established. Give it a go

Just install QLprism which adds itself into your Steam game library. You can press shift+tab ingame and set up VOIP there. The new beta also adds delayed chat as well, so your messages are kept and delivered later to people who are not online when you are typing to them. Yes I know it's "Steam", but hey it works, and better than nothing imo.

Suggesting the use of an outdated third party chat program has been stickied on the forum for years. What an amazing difference you would see in quake live if it came full loaded with a competent communication system.

Even though it is absurdly easy to implement, they don't want to because it would be difficult to moderate each room considering this is a teen rated game. Every single thing that is on quakelive.com has to be 100% made and controlled by id. I know that reasoning is completely flawed and no one in the industry follows it no matter the rating, but that's the reason why there are no global communications in quakelive.com. It is particularly short-sighted considering the quake franchise has vastly benefited of community efforts over the years.

Same reason was said by the devs when talking about embedding streams on the site, which would be immensely beneficial for the game, the community and a kid can do it in 1 one minute, and that's one of the reasons why quakecon coverage blows since ever (pro caster teams don't like their very restrictive policies so they refuse the offer. Those who accept them have to deal with amateurs working as quakecon technical staff and have no saying about the schedule or tournament rules).
Also, though they haven't spoken about this specifically, that's most probably the same reason why there's no community exposure on the main site, including tournaments and whatnot.

Funny thing is syncerror tweets, posts on this forum and posts some stuff in facebook, though literally no one reads that. That has to mean the very restrictive policies come from id software's management (the dude with the ponytail, 80s porn look) and not the actual quakelive staff (2 persons).

Finally, it has to be said the three said issues may seem trivial at first, but implementing those would be by far the best addition ever added to this game. Only thing that could surpass it is freely allowing user content.
