I don't know if the marketing of id software is doing a good or a bad job.
The question is what they want to achieve with quake live and what their strategy might be.
My assumptions:
Quake live is a poor dog in their bcg matrix.
Quake live is in the decline/withdraw phase of the product live cycle.
The strategy is just to keep the target group of fps gamers "happy" and not to loose them to competitors.
If my assumptions are right, there is no point for ID software to spend much money in marketing campains.
1: You know who Betty White is.
2: You recognized her in their commercial.
Looks like The target audience was hit to me. Most 10 year old kids on COD I assure you do not know who Betty White is. But a person who played this game 10 years ago is now well over 25, and does laundry.
And besides. If Betty White is using that laundry detergent it's probably some good stuff. Old people usually have soft skin and are wise of what household brands to use. I trust Betty decisions.
